Godot 2D Enemies
Deckbuild your next game
This a Godot Engine implementation of the 🔴Patterned Enemy Routine gameplay element from the Ludonauts Gameplay Library.
Get the a complete collection of game mechanics with insights to help you design and build your dream games.
The Patterned Enemy Routine is a game AI design approach in which non-player combatants follow a fixed, deterministic sequence of actions with movement patterns, attack routines, and state transitions that do not adapt to player input or game state. The player's challenge is to observe, memorize, and exploit the cycle rather than react to improvised threats.
Use when the design goal is skill expression through pattern mastery rather than adaptive challenge, because it rewards repeated play and deliberate learning over time. Prefer over emergent AI when encounters should feel fair, readable, and authored rather than dynamic and unpredictable. Avoid in open-ended combat systems where player agency and variety of approach are the core promise since scripted loops can feel stale when adaptability is the intended experience.

What I would like to see is something like Galaga where the enemies come in various wave patterns. Sometimes they come in onto the screen, do an attack pattern, and then exit the screen. Sometimes they come in, do an attack pattern then take up a formation.
Or a horizontal (or vertical) wave shooter where various enemies come in waves in various patterns to attack and then leave the screen.
Something like this would be great!
Can you believe Galaga was the first thing I reeearched for this? I even though "Nah, I don't think my audience would expect this from Patterned Enemy Routine".
I will see if I can make a quick alternative demo this week and push an update. Thank you for the feedback, Pegasus!
